Book early, especially for summer and for the balcony rooms facing the river. With so few rooms, the house fills weeks in advance, and a courtyard room, while pleasant, does not give the same experience as waking up above the Aude.

Plan your castle days realistically. Peyrepertuse and Quéribus are best combined into one day, Montségur makes another, and Puilaurens fits into a half day with the gorges. Climbs to the castles are steep and exposed to sun and wind, so good shoes and water are necessary.

Stay in Espéraza on a Sunday morning if you can. The market is the best time to understand the town, with local producers and newcomers side by side. Buying cheese, bread and fruit there for a picnic by the river is the simplest pleasure of the week.

Ask the hosts to prepare a packed lunch before castle days. In villages around Peyrepertuse and Quéribus restaurants are few and often closed outside peak season, and a picnic on the ramparts is far better than a hungry drive in search of an open kitchen.

Pets are welcome in the house, which is rare among chambres d'hôtes of this standard. Inform the hosts when booking, as rooms are few and they may wish to plan accordingly.

About Rennes le Château: the village is small, and the museum of Abbé Saunière explains the mystery that brought the place world fame through the treasure legend. Visiting late in the day, when tour groups have left, gives the village its quiet atmosphere back, and the view over the valley at sunset justifies the drive.
